nahlaot

About the neighborhood

Nachlaot (Hebrew: נחלאות, also Naḥlaʾoth) is a cluster of 23 courtyard neighborhoods in central Jerusalem surrounding the Mahane Yehuda Market. It is known for its narrow, winding lanes, old-style housing, hidden courtyards and many small synagogues. (wikipedia)

At one time Nachlaot had a higher concentration of synagogues than anywhere else in the world, around 300 within a radius of just a few blocks. Many of these were not much more than a tiny room with space for only about a dozen worshippers.

The neighborhood includes the Ades Synagogue, Ades Congregation, the flagship of the Syrian Halebi community, as well as the synagogues located in the Knesset Aleph (Beis Rachel), Batei Broide, and Batei Rand neighborhoods, following the tradition of Old Jerusalem, including followers of the Vilna Gaon as well as Hasidic tradition.

Did you know?

One of the market's most beloved spots is The Halva Kingdom, founded by Eli Mamman, who carries on his Moroccan family's secret recipes. This renowned Jerusalem-based store offers a wide variety of sweet sesame treats, exclusive to the Machne Yehuda market. The brand boasts over 100 different flavors and types of halva, each meticulously crafted using imported Ethiopian sesame, ground with millstones, and blended with sugar for the perfect sweetness.

The original Halva Kingdom store opened in 1947 in the Old City. After the Jews were deported from the Old City, the family relocated to Machne Yehuda market. Today, the halva is produced in a factory in Mishor Edomim, maintaining the traditional methods that have made it a local favorite for decades.

Construction is set to commence imminently, with an expected completion timeline of 4.5 years. Remarkably, all apartments in the project have already been sold by the purchasing group. The site is adjacent to the NYX boutique hotel project by the Fatal Group, which is also under construction. The second phase of the development will feature two additional residential towers, approximately 270 apartments, commercial spaces, and another boutique hotel, pending the advanced approval process from the IBA.
